NHTSA Gives 2011 Acura MDX 5-Star Crash Rating

2011 Acura MDX

The 2011 Acura MDX received an overall rating of five stars in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s new crash-test rating system, the safety agency announced today.
The MDX’s overall composite score is composed of a four-star frontal, four-star rollover and a perfect five-star rating for the combined side pole and barrier tests. The side barrier test is an area where other vehicles have shown weakness with the safety agency’s new testing format. The side pole test simulates a 20-mph side-impact crash into a 10-inch-diameter pole or tree at a 75-degree angle just behind the A-pillar on the driver’s side.

The MDX does get an asterisk next to its five-star side rating: After the side barrier test, 10.88 ounces of gasoline leaked from the fuel system, which, in a real accident, would have caused a fire.
NHTSA also tested the 2011 Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h, and each received an overall rating of four stars — four stars in frontal and rollover, and five stars in side impact. Even though that’s the same score breakdown as the MDX, the Lexus overall score isn’t equal. We've contacted representatives from the NHTSA about the issue and have yet to hear back.

After being officially revealed for the 2010 model year, the Acura ZDX enters the 2011 model year offering the same level of luxury and performance. The 2011 ZDX will be offered in three trim levels: ZDX ($45,645), ZDX with Technology Package ($50,145), and ZDX with Advance Package ($56,195).

Acura TL Enhanced With AWD, Stick

Consumer Reports puts the 2010 Acura MDX on top of the rankings for luxury SUVs. Published on their June 2010 offering, the 2010 MDX was given an overall score of “Excellent” with a road test rating of 85.

The Acura SUV was way ahead of its pack as the LR4 from Land Rover was issued with a “Very Good” over all score and road-test score of 73. Down the list of Very Good luxury SUVs were the Lincoln MKT with a grade of 72 and the Audi Q7 which got a 68.

The new MDX has an improved powertrain that gives it better acceleration and fuel efficiency. The Acura MDX is now the best 3-row luxury SUV of Consumer Reports.

2004-2008 Acura TSX Recalled

About 167,000 Acura TSX cars from the 2004 through 2008 model years are being recalled. High temperatures could cause the power steering hose to deteriorate prematurely, possibly allowing it to crack and leak power steering fluid, which could cause a fire.

Honda will notify owners when the recall begins in May 2010. Owners may contact Acura at 1-800-382-2238 about Recall Number R35.

Acura Recalling 2010 ZDX for Air Bag Problem

Acura is recalling about 1,850 of its 2010 ZDXs because the passenger-side air bag might not deploy properly in a crash.

Acura told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the dashboard cover “may not have been properly laser scored” and would not allow the air bag to inflate properly.

The company says it is not aware of any consumers having a problem and learned of the defect from a supplier. The ZDX, which Acura calls a four-door sports coupe, is assembled in Alliston, Canada.

Honda has issued a recall of about 1,850 Acura ZDX vehicles from the 2010 model year, according to the automaker.

The recall is to inspect the dashboard surface material, which may prevent the passenger-side airbag from deploying during an accident. There have been no reported incidents of this, but a manufacturing quality check found that some vehicles don’t have the proper laser-cut scoring on the underside of the material. Without this scoring, the airbag might not deploy.

The 2010 Acura TSX receives an available V6 engine. This front-wheel drive sedan is Acura's entry-level car, and TSX shares some of its basic design with the European-market Honda Accord. The standard engine remains a 201-hp 2.4-liter 4-cylinder. A 280-hp 3.5-liter V6, borrowed from the larger Acura TL, is newly available. The 4-cylinder is available with manual or automatic transmission. The V6 is automatic only. The 2010 Acura TSX comes in a single trim level that includes standard features such as a sunroof, wireless cell-phone link, leather upholstery, USB port, heated front seats, and automatic climate control. Acura’s all-new 4-door sports coupe, the 2010 ZDX, has an official on sale date of Dec. 15 with an MSRP of $45,495, which does not include another $81o for handling and delivery.

Since it debuted at this past April’s New York Auto Show, the American designed and American-manufactured stands out with its styling and performance numbers.

2010 Acura ZDX: Ferocious styling

The ZDX's ultra-rakish coupe profile is limned in a dark-tinted glass canopy that stretches from the hood all the way to the taillamp assembly. The sides of the greenhouse taper inward dramatically to the rear, creating outrageous rear haunches that might as well have been lifted from a Paris-Dakar Porsche.

This is the first Acura designed, engineered and being built in North America (Alliston, Ontario. That's Canada. Can you smell the bacon?).

The ZDX's Yankee designers -- all trained at Art Center in Pasadena -- have managed to transcend the dictates of the marketing weenies to make what I think is a lasting contribution to the designed world. Forget the modernism of the Tokyo skyline. The more you look at this thing the more you expect it to have a license plate from Alpha Centauri.

Based loosely on the mechanicals of the MDX, the ZDX's roofline is 6 inches lower, its ultra-rakish coupe profile limned in a dark-tinted glass canopy that stretches from the hood all the way to the taillamp assembly. The sides of the greenhouse taper inward dramatically to the rear, creating outrageous rear haunches that might as well have been lifted from a Paris-Dakar Porsche. The side window daylight opening (the DLO in industry parlance) is sports-car narrow, slitted and menacing -- the effect you'd get if you spit in Clint Eastwood's eye. To further de-emphasize the four doors, the rear door handles are hidden in the corner of the DLO.

The whole thing is as taut and engaged as a crossbow aimed at your temple. Nifty.

Five years ago, such a car would have remained an auto-show concept, a turnstile queen, virtually un-buildable. The rear quarter panels, with their complex hyper-paraboloid shape and deep "draw" -- which is to say, the depth of the metal-stamping form -- would have been too difficult and expensive to manufacture. Advances in tooling technology have changed that.

The ZDX's glass-to-glass panels around the panoramic roof mean there's hell to pay in fit and finish, wind-noise attenuation and weatherproofing. This is not an easy car to build.

Nor is it cheap to build. Acura lavished a lot of money on the interior, including couture-quality leathers on the dash, seats and doors; a suede-like headliner material; and a fully finished cargo area with plated metal handles and high-quality carpet. Another interesting bit of hardware is the new "monolith" center control panel, a bank of black switches that remain dark until the relevant systems are activated. It kind of reminds me of the "dark panel" feature in Saabs.

Under all its exotic skins and complex surfaces, however, the ZDX is a more-or-less conventional, and less compelling, Acura crossover.

Acura's ZDX Overpriced

Easily one of the most controversial designs for 2010, the Acura ZDX
looks as though it takes a page from the BMW X6's playbook.
With its sloped roofline, it certainly bears some cues.

Although most people will point to its facade as a key point of interest, we won't because something else interests us; its price.

Starting off just under $45,500, it does not seem to be that bad of a deal. You get: 300-horsepower, all-wheel drive, heated and power seats, rearview camera, two-zone climate control and Bluetooth.

Step it up a notch with the Technology Package, you drop another five large and you get the GPS navigation unit, Smart Entry, multi-view rearview camera, an upgraded sound system and more.

If this does not suffice and you expect more from your ZDX, then you can obtain the Advance Package, which includes: blind spot detection, active cruise control, Collision Mitigation Braking System, six-level heated and cooled front seats, and more.

All of this does not come cheap though at a hefty $56,045, not including the $810 destination charge.

Priced at $43,040 (including a $810 destination charge), Acura’s 2010 MDX crossover was given a mild facelift and some extra features.
This puts the price of the 2010 MDX about $2100 more than the 2009 model.

The price increase is nothing to fret about since the premium includes some extra goodies. Standard equipment on all MDX trim levels now includes power tailgates, steering wheel-mounted shift paddles, a rearview camera integrated into the rearview mirror, and a new hill start function. Some 2010 MDXs continue to use the same 3.7-liter V-6 as last year, but it’s now bolted to a new six-speed automatic transmission, making it to achieve 16/21 mpg (city/highway).

We’re tempted to believe that ZDX stands for “zero demand expected.” The new Acura ZDX is one of those genre-less oddballs that occasionally comes along, like the Subaru Baja and the BMW X6. They slip past the guardians of sanity at their home offices and drift into the market like pollen wafting on a breeze of optimism.

They often die quickly and are flushed.

Long ago we described just such a spore, the AMC Gremlin, as a Hornet with the useful space hacked out of it. Behold the 21st-century version: Acura’s MDX luxury people mover with at least some of the useful space hacked—no, that’s old-fashioned, it’s been carefully shaved, planed, and CNC-milled out of it.

This is styling that takes a toll. To make a ZDX, an entire seat row from the MDX goes sayonara, as does about 35 percent of the cargo space with the seats folded. Width and wheelbase remain unchanged from the MDX, and length grows slightly, but the ZDX’s roof is more than five inches lower, pruning just over three inches from the rear-seat headroom.

Getting in back involves a limbo stoop under the low-cut opening. Have first aid at the ready because foreheads will be whacked, and an ungoggled eye or two may be poked by the rear-door glass, which comes to a menacing point at the concealed door handles.

The upside? At least one seven-year-old thought the ZDX was the coolest vehicle he’d ever seen. There are, like, 22-hundred-thousand buttons and a huge sunroof to stand up in and secret compartments in the back for ninja stuff and you can fly to Alaska in three seconds on the navigation screen and you can open the remote-control hatchback from about a mile away. And stuff.

All of which is ironic, as the ZDX will appeal mainly to people who don’t have kids. Acura predicts sales of just 6000 ZDXs per year, knowing full well that in America’s vastness one could find 6000 buyers for cars with square wheels.

Prices should start in the mid-40s, slightly higher than the MDX, but one like our test car, with the extra hundred-thousand buttons of the Technology package (upgraded leather, nav system, premium audio, backup camera, and more) and the Advance package (adaptive cruise control, adjustable suspension, blind-spot warning, precollision warning, etc.), will land in the mid-50s. Feature to feature, it’s less costly than the 300-hp BMW X6 xDrive 35i, which starts at $57,125, but that’s like saying an aardvark makes a better pet than an ostrich.

The ZDX isn’t lazy, hitting 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, rather fleet considering the 4421-pound curb weight (about 175 pounds lighter than an MDX). The 3.7-liter V-6 makes 300 horsepower, as it does in the MDX, and the new six-speed automatic and cylinder-cutoff system are mileage stretchers. We saw 20 mpg.

Nor does the ZDX fear a curve. It’s a confident, stable handler, thanks to some steering-feel improvements Acura made after our initial write-up. Also credit the system named with our favorite Japanese hyperbole, Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. When understeer attacks, the system overdrives the outside rear wheel to help turn this big bronco. It works.

Completely redesigned for 2009, the Acura TL adds a six-speed manual transmission for 2010, available on the new TL SH-AWD Technology Package. It is the first time Acura has offered its Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) with a manual gearbox.

The TL uses a 3.5-litre V6 in the front-wheel version, and a 3.7-litre in the all-wheel; both use a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode and paddle shifters, along with the six-speed manual available with the Technology Package.

The availability of a 6-speed manual transmission for the 2010 TL SH-AWD® represents the first time Acura has ever paired its acclaimed Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ system with a manual gearbox. In addition, the new close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission is approximately 110 lbs lighter than the Sequential SportShift automatic transmission to further benefit acceleration, braking and cornering. The 6-speed manual transmission is an all-new design that is substantially stronger than the previous generation TL manual transmission. In addition to using a more rigid aluminum case and heavier-duty internals, the new manual transmission employs precisely selected gear ratios based on the characteristics of the TL's new 3.7L V-6 engine and SH-AWD® drivetrain. New gear synchronizers deliver improved shift accuracy and feel, and a short-throw shifter assembly generates confident shifting combined with low shift effort.

Acura engineers also designed an entirely new clutch system for the new 6-speed manual transmission to withstand the TL's robust power output while also improving modulation for noticeably easier use. The new self-adjusting, dual-mass clutch delivers extremely constant pedal effort throughout the entire stroke of the pedal. By keeping the effort linear, the driver has improved feel that results in better clutch interaction. The TL SH-AWD® 6MT has a specially calibrated Hill Start Assist system that helps prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards when the driver switches from the brake to the accelerator while stopped on a hill. When the road incline exceeds an 8-degree threshold and the vehicle is fully stopped, Hill Start Assist automatically activates. When Hill Start Assist is active, the brakes automatically hold for one second as the driver's foot transitions from the brake to the accelerator pedal. The brakes are automatically released when the vehicle begins to move forward.

The 2010 TL SH-AWD® 6MT has exclusive suspension tuning via special coil spring and shock absorber rates tuned for flatter cornering with reduced pitching motions under acceleration and braking. The front dampers incorporate 5-percent more tension damping during low piston speeds to generate improved turn-in feel. In addition, the front dampers generate 14-percent less high speed compression damping which helps improve ride quality.

The TL SH-AWD® 6MT employs firmer engine and transmission bushings that better resist engine and/or transmission movement during spirited driving. Engine side mount bushing stiffness increases by 80-percent, front mount rate increases by 17-percent, rear hydro mount firmness increases by 50-percent and the transmission upper mount is stiffened by 100-percent.

For 6-speed manual transmission applications, special heavy-duty front driveshafts are used. In addition to being 2-percent larger in diameter, the driveshafts have a larger inboard spline size and team with more heavy-duty CV joints.

The TL SH-AWD® fit with the new 6-speed transmission will also benefit from exclusive Electronic Power Steering (EPS) tuning. Just as with the TL SH-AWD® with Sequential SportShift 5-speed automatic, the EPS delivers low steering effort for parking maneuvers that progressively firms up as speed increases.

With the 6-speed manual transmission TL SH-AWD®, the EPS system is further tuned to deliver a slightly heavier feel as speed increases thus generating more confident mid- to high-speed driving dynamics. The addition of a manual transmission, an all-new clutch system and suspension changes yield an 88 lb. reduction in overall vehicle weight. The weight reduction not only delivers improved performance, but also generates a more favorable front/rear weight bias. Compared to an automatic transmission equipped TL SH-AWD®, the 6-speed manual version improves weight distribution by 1-percent thus generating a 58/42 ratio versus the 5AT's 59/41 ratio.

The big news for the 2010 model year is the addition of a front-wheel drive RDX model– up until now the RDX has only been available with Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system. Thanks to a lighter curb weight, the FWD RDX posts better numbers than its AWD counterpart, achieving ratings of 19mpg city, 22mpg highway. The AWD model remains unchanged at 17/20mpg city/highway.

At first glance, East Liberty, Ohio is one of those sleepy, blink-and-you'll-miss-it midwestern towns, the kind you find buried in every county from Columbus to Kankakee. Then, on the outskirts of town, you round a corner and come face-to-face with an eighteen-wheeler cranking across an enormous banked oval. And a dump truck on a skidpad. And a small, diabolical little road course with more off-camber corners than you can shake a Snell sticker at. Welcome to the Transportation Research Center, otherwise known as TRC.

Acura invited us here for a track-only drive of its TL SH-AWD 6MT prototype, a car that by all rights shouldn't exist. The 6MT bit is the interesting part; it stands for six-speed manual transmission, and the SH-AWD acronym represents Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. The combination - the most powerful model Acura offers, paired with electronically controlled all-wheel drive and a clutch pedal - is enticing on paper, but in an age of declining manual-transmission sales, it's also a little perplexing. If you're shooting for greater sales and a broader demographic, why bother building a destined-to-be-low-volume car for a rapidly shrinking market?

Predictably, the (lovably impractical) answer can be found in one word: gearheads. A handful of renegade Acura engineers installed a three-pedal setup into an early production TL (the car is currently available only with an automatic) and begged management to drive it. After a little track time, the suits went nuts. We were asked to come to Ohio on the grounds that a manual gearbox transformed the hottest version of Acura's TL, and that the added wait and development cost (an extra twelve months of R&D; the manual TL won't go on sale until fall of 2009) would be worth it. Frankly, we were more than a little skeptical.

Never content resting on its laurels, Acura brings to market the 2010 RDX with a fresh new exterior look, a more luxurious interior, and a host of new technology features. For 2010, the RDX is now available with a two-wheel drive option which offers improved fuel economy and a lower price point over its SH-AWD™ counterpart.

“The RDX has always offered a unique mix of great performance, good utility, lots customer relevant technology and sharp looks- but for 2010 these attributes get even better,” said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales. “The availability of a new 2WD model with improved fuel economy and a lower price make the 2010 RDX a smart choice.”

The RDX continues to be the compact luxury SUV of choice for drivers with energetic lifestyles who need a responsive and sporty vehicle with plenty of utility and leading edge styling. 2010 marks the first time ever that the RDX is available with a two-wheel-drive option, which is appealing to customers who live in warmer climates and who don’t need the all-weather capability all-wheel drive offers. Due to the decreased weight of the two wheel drive model, the RDX gets improved fuel economy over the SH-AWD model- resulting in an improvement of 2 mpg in the city and on the highway.

Externally, the 2010 RDX receives numerous changes resulting in a more aggressive, sporty appearance. Exterior changes include redesigned 18-inch diameter aluminum-alloy wheels, bold new front and rear bumper fascias, Acura’s signature design front grille, revised headlights and taillights, new exhaust tips and satin trim accents.

While the RDX’s sport-minded chassis remains the same, the 2010 model features revised braking system components that deliver better feel and enhanced durability. Also for 2010, the RDX receives several new standard interior features including a rear view camera system, electronic compass, a pull handle to make closing the rear hatch easier, auto-function headlights, ambient footwell lighting, a center console storage tray, improved cupholders, USB-port connectivity, and Note function for XM® Radio. Additionally, the RDX interior gets subtle changes to the leather, resulting in a richer, more premium look to the interior seating surfaces.

True to Acura’s leadership in the application of advanced technology, the RDX incorporates a class-leading array of features that keep passengers informed, entertained and in control. Every RDX features as standard Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® connectivity with new Bluetooth®audio capabilities, a 7-speaker Acura Premium Sound System and a new USB port that allows the connection of (and charging of) items such as an iPhone® or iPod®. Powertrain

The RDX is equipped with a turbocharged 2.3-liter DOHC 16-valve inline four-cylinder engine incorporating computer-controlled “intelligent” i-VTEC® intake/exhaust valve actuation that delivers enhanced performance across a broad powerband. The heart of the RDX’s performance is its Variable Flow Turbocharger (VFT) that delivers an unusually broad powerband with virtually no lag in throttle response. The turbocharger works in concert with i-VTEC® to deliver outstanding acceleration and efficiency while driving at a variety of speeds.

For 2010, the turbo system makes use of a new inlet pipe that is thicker to reduce noise during high boost situations and the RDX incorporate a dual-stage radiator fan to further reduce cabin noise.

Rated output for the 2.3L I-4 engine is 240 horsepower at 6,000 rpm with 260 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. The RDX has an EPA city/highway fuel economy rating* of 19/24 mpg (RDX) and 17/22 mpg (RDX SH-AWD™) along with meeting EPA TIER 2 – BIN 5 and CARB LEV-2 ULEV exhaust emissions standards.

A performance-minded Sequential SportShift 5-speed automatic transmission is standard on the RDX and an electronically-controlled Drive-by-Wire™ throttle system works with the transmission to execute exceptionally quick and smooth gear changes. The Sequential SportShift feature allows the transmission to function in a conventional automatic mode or can be controlled manually via steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Chassis

Acura’s exclusive Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD™) system is available on the RDX, helping it to maximize available traction while improving handling balance and responsiveness in a variety of weather conditions. SH-AWD™ distributes optimum torque not only between the front and rear axles, but also between the left and right rear wheels while also being able to overdrive the rear wheels. The system’s direct yaw control utilizes torque vectoring to help reduce understeer thus enhancing steering accuracy and adding to total cornering ability.

New for 2010 is a two-wheel-drive version of the RDX that offers a lighter vehicle weight, improved fuel economy and a lower purchase price. The 2WD RDX employs a front wheel drive drivetrain design, but otherwise retains the same exceptional chassis and driving dynamics for which the RDX is known.

Precise and responsive handling is generated by fully independent front and rear suspension. The MacPherson strut (front) and multi-link (rear) suspension system is tuned for compliant control, and the suspension is assisted by large-diameter front and rear stabilizer bars for flatter cornering. Standard to the RDX is Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with traction control to further enhance vehicle controllability and grip.

For 2010, changes to the brake booster and servo deliver even better brake pedal feel along with less initial brake “grabbiness”. In addition, the brake system makes use of revised rear brake pad actuation that delivers less drag and longer pad life; also added to the mix are Geomet-coated brake rotors for improved looks and added corrosion protection.

Exterior

RDX exterior styling further emphasizes the crossover SUV’s sporty athleticism. Large wheel arches, aggressively raked body sides, steeply raked windscreen and a short rear overhang generate an RDX with a taut and muscular presence. A unique rear hatch allows for a smooth transition of the body to the rear bumper- a transition that delivers a more custom look as well as eases loading and unloading of cargo.

For 2010, the RDX gets a new front fascia, Acura’s signature front grille, a hood with a new front edge design and updated HID headlights that are now controlled by a standard Auto on/off function. Looking at the side of the 2010 RDX you’ll notice new wheels that team with the vehicle’s wide track (61.9-in. front, 62.6-in. rear) to deliver excellent handling. At the rear, a much more aggressive bumper fascia, rectangular exhaust finishers, revised taillights and satin finish trim give the 2010 RDX a fresh new look.

Redesigned high-intensity discharge (HID) low beam headlights command the corners of the RDX’s front fascia and fenders. The headlight’s new design incorporates a “smoke style” chrome plating treatment and complements the angular pattern set by the Acura grille. Front bumper integrated fog lamps are standard on the RDX, and for 2010 they are mounted within separate side grilles located at the corners of the new front fascia. Both front and rear wheel arches are bold and broad, and new 18×7.5-inch 10-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels further add to the dramatic appearance of the RDX.

Interior

Inside every RDX, leather trimmed front seats deliver a high outward visibility “eye point” that provides a confident field of view. The 3-passenger rear seat has a 60/40 split-folding capability and, when folded flat, significantly expands the load area and increases the total cargo volume to 60.6 cubic feet.

Multiple storage compartments are positioned throughout the interior, including a lockable dual-level center console (that is large enough to accommodate a briefcase) conveniently located between the front seats. For 2010, two revised interior color themes are available: a darker, richer Ebony and; a lighter, more premium looking Taupe.

Acura interior design has always made intuitive functionality a priority, and in the 2010 RDX all important systems and controls now feature even more intuitive button placement along with easier-to-read markings. The systems used most frequently – audio and cruise control – have switches positioned on the steering wheel, and for 2010 the HVAC buttons have been moved closer to the driver. Technology Package items like Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®, Multi-Information Display (MID) and the AcuraLink™ Satellite Communications System can be controlled via switches on the steering wheel. AcuraLink™ messages consist of text displayed on the navigation screen, plus full details via Text-To-Speech can be heard over the RDX audio system. For 2010, the RDX has improved Text-To-Speech voice recognition with more words that can be recognized.

Also new for 2010 is a center console tray that is a convenient way to store items such as a wallet, spare keys, or an iPod®. In addition, integrated to the underside of the lid is a coin holder and place for holding credit or gate cards. New for 2010 is a USB port (also located in the center console) that allows for the easy connection of items such as an iPod®, iPhone® or a memory stick storage device. Standard is an Acura Premium Sound System with AM/FM tuner, 6-disc in-dash CD, MP3, WMA, XM® Radio, 7 speakers and a 360 watts watt amplifier. The RDX has soothing blue low-level ambient lighting in the ceiling that illuminates the front center console area, and new for 2010 is ambient blue footwell lighting.

For 2010, the available Technology Package adds even more capability, and integrates seamlessly into the RDX’s performance-oriented driving environment. The Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™ has a revised 8-inch screen, improved navigation system feature use and content, and a faster reacting and more useful rear view camera. Non-Technology Package RDX’s now get a standard rear view camera system with a viewing screen that is integrated into the auto-dimming rearview mirror.

With the AcuraLink™ Satellite Communication System and AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic™, the RDX driver can easily navigate around complex freeways. In addition, the navigation system now includes Traffic Rerouting™ that allows automatic rerouting around problem areas. Also new for the 2010 RDX is AcuraLink Real-Time Weather™ with weather radar image maps that provide weather tracking for area-specific, continually-updated weather conditions between your current location and your final destination.

Part of the RDX Technology Package is a spectacular Acura/ELS Surround® premium audio system with 6-disc DVD-audio, CD/MP3/WMA player, DTS®, AM/FM tuner, XM® Radio, Dolby Pro Logic II 10 speakers and a 410 watt amplifier. The Acura/ELS® audio system was designed by 6-time Grammy® award winning sound engineer Elliot Scheiner. When playing DVD-Audio discs (DVD-Audio is 500 times clearer than traditional CD), this advanced system delivers eight discreet audio channels (up from the usual two channels) to create an exceptionally accurate listening experience. For 2010, the Acura/ELS Surround® audio system receives a Note function for XM® Radio that allows the driver to later recall the song title, artist, a short excerpt of the actual song along with the XM® channel that played the song.

The Technology Package also includes a GPS-linked, solar-sensing, dual-zone, automatic climate control system. In total, these advanced technologies put the RDX at the cutting edge of the Entry Premium SUV segment.

Safety and Security

The RDX’s technology leadership also extends to safety, where a long list of advanced features, including an Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure allow the RDX to achieve NHTSA’s top rating (5-Stars) for both frontal and side impact crash tests**

The ACE™ body structure employs a network of interconnected front frame structures that work to absorb and redirect collision forces away from the passenger cabin while helping improve crash compatibility with vehicles of different sizes in a frontal collision. A special frame member located below the RDX’s front bumper is designed to engage the front bumper of a lower vehicle, allowing the bumper systems of both vehicles to attenuate crash energy more efficiently.

In addition, a specially engineered hood, collapsible hood hinges, breakaway wiper pivots and other features help reduce the chance of pedestrian injury in the event of a collision with the vehicle.

Inside, the RDX has a full complement of passive safety features. Key technologies include the latest generation of dual-stage, multiple-threshold airbags for the driver and front passenger, plus side airbags for the driver and front passenger along with side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor for all outboard occupants. The front passenger’s side airbag features an Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) to prevent airbag deployment if a child or small-stature adult leans into the deployment path. LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) child seat mounting systems allow the quick and secure installation of a child seats.

2010 Acura ZDX First Drive

The new Acura ZDX may just be the best-looking new model of 2010. But its handling and performance prove it's more than a pretty face

What's the best-looking new model on the market this year? My vote could easily go to the all-new 2010 Acura ZDX, a rakish-looking crossover vehicle that Honda's (HMC) luxury car division describes as a "four-door sports coupe" (never mind that coupes, by definition, have two doors). The ZDX looks even better in reality than in photos. When I test-drove a couple of preproduction ZDXs through Manhattan recently, even jaded New Yorkers were stopping in their tracks and shouting questions about the new model, which will hit dealer showrooms in December.

The ZDX is designed mainly for affluent empty nesters, couples whose kids are grown and who no longer need the passenger capacity of a true SUV. It combines the good looks of a luxury coupe such as, say, a Mercedes CLS550 with enough luggage capacity to stow four golf bags behind its second row of seats.

The market for such vehicles will grow, Acura contends, "as the population matures, becoming couples again rather than large family units, and enjoying the fruits of their success through travel, second homes, and unique lifestyle activities." To put it more prosaically: As baby boomers age, Acura figures that a lot of active, affluent old geezers will be in the market for a vehicle that seems more stylish than an SUV but less sedate than a luxury sedan.

Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but the ZDX is expected to start at around $45,000, rising to perhaps $55,000 when you load it up with options. Its image is meant to be upscale and exclusive. Acura sees the ZDX competing with, in addition to the Mercedes CLS, such diverse models as Nissan's (NSANY) Infiniti FX35, BMW's (BMWG) X6, and the Porsche Cayenne. Acura only expects to sell about 6,000 ZDXs in 2010, and 8,000 to 10,000 annually in later years.

The ZDX is Acura's first truly North American model—engineered in Ohio, styled in California, and manufactured in Ontario, Canada. It has the oomph Americans like under its hood, provided by the same marvelous 3.7-liter, 300-horsepower V6 engine found in the Acura MDX SUV. Also in keeping with mainstream American tastes, the only available transmission is a six-speed automatic—though with a manual function for those who wish to do the shifting themselves, as well as the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters that are now de rigueur on any North American model with pretensions to sportiness.

The ZDX's fuel economy—16 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway—is only slightly better than that of the '09 MDX and six-cylinder BMW X6 (15/20) and about the same as that of the Infiniti FX35 (16/23). However, it's markedly better than the six-cylinder Porsche Cayenne (14/16).

Behind the Wheel

The ZDX is meant to drive something like a conventional luxury car, and it comes close. The big difference is that the floor is a bit higher off the ground than a car's, giving the ZDX more of an SUV-like feel. The ZDX isn't intended to be superfast, but it's lighter and therefore somewhat quicker than the Acura MDX, which accelerates from zero to 60 in under eight seconds. That's plenty of speed for most people, and there's a ton of power when you punch the gas at highway speed. The cabin is luxury-car quiet.

I'm a big fan of Acura's new Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system, which comes standard on the ZDX.

2010 Acura MDX Hybrid

Acura has updated its MDX for the 2010 model year, with a number of styling, performance, and technology updates to keep it fresh against its rivals. The big SUV keeps its versatile seven-passenger, three-row layout but sports a new exterior look, a revised powertrain, several chassis refinements, more comfort features and a longer standard equipment list.

The MDX may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, especially when it comes to off-roading, but it’s still an entertaining vehicle to drive and, despite some odd exclusions on the features list, a supremely confident family vehicle with an excellent safety record. Pricing starts at roughly $43,000 and stretches beyond $50,000 for fully loaded versions. TheCarConnection.com accepted travel expenses to an Acura-sponsored event to produce this hands-on road test.

Visually, the seven-passenger 2010 MDX receives more aggressive styling in the form of new front and rear bodywork, a new front grille and numerous new trim enhancements. Other details include a revised hood, new side sills, polished stainless-steel exhaust tips, and revised taillights with brighter LEDs.

Inside, the 2010 MDX benefits from the expanded use of Milano leather, a new, thicker sports steering wheel with racing-inspired paddle shifters, new gauges, optional ventilated front seats and upgraded interior trim.

Under the hood sits a more refined version of the 3.7-liter V-6 engine from the 2009 model. The VTEC unit produces 300-horsepower and 270-pound-feet of torque and is mated to a new six-speed automatic transmission with pseudo manual control.

The engine is a gem, with strong acceleration and impressive passing power making the MDX one of the most capable SUVs in its class. To widen the powerband while simultaneously improving fuel efficiency, the V-6 engine also features variable valve adjustment of the intake valves, revised high-lift camshafts, a computer controlled dual-stage induction system and an electronic drive-by-wire throttle system. The end result is a gain in fuel economy--it’s up to 16/21 mpg, higher than in 2009--as well as the ability to tow 5,000-pounds while snapping off quick gearchanges and stepping smartly away from stoplights.

Acura unveils unique SUV luxury ZDX

Certainly the new Acura ZDX is a show-stopper, even in a town where everyone has seen just about everything.

The ZDX is easily the most audacious automobile that Honda's upscale division has devised since its spectacular NSX sports car was unveiled some 20 years ago.

Acura's strategy in a nutshell: Offer premium sport utility vehicle buyers a more daring and sportier package that sort of resembles a coupe, but still retains its all-wheel-drive capability. With that premise, the uniquely positioned ZDX, arriving this December, will try and seduce a niche of early-adopting sophisticates willing to purchase a vehicle that's far outside the mainstream.

Today's limited choices in the luxo car/ute category include the Infiniti FX and BMW X6. The ZDX's interpretation begins with a platform developed from the highly successful MDX sport ute. From there, the company's California design team shifted into overdrive in developing a radically desirable shape.

Viewed head-on, the MDX's carry-over DNA is apparent, but beyond the front doors, the roofline swoops dramatically downward, seamlessly blending with an elongated hatchback that abruptly folds into the back bumper. The front doors are made coupe-like long, which is intentional since they help in masking two smaller rear-seat openings, the door handles of which have been cleverly camouflaged beside the rear-most roof pillar. The roof is actually a continuous glass surface extending from the windshield to the farthest edge of the hatch opening.

Members of the design group freely admit that their influence in penning the ZDX's interior came from the well-organized and uncluttered guest-room styling at San Francisco's Hotel St. Regis. That's difficult to verify, but the clean look is certainly in evidence, especially the well-carpeted storage area that can be extended when the passenger seat and split-folding rear seat are folded flat. As well, the spare tire stows under the load floor, leaving a substantial brief-case-sized compartment in back to keep all kinds of personal effects under wraps.

Also hidden from view is the MDX-based 3.7-liter V-6 that directs its 300-horsepower to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. In normal driving conditions, the front-to-rear torque is split on a 30:70 basis, but will automatically adjust up to a 90:10 if the rear wheels lose traction. However, in a turn, up to 100 percent of the rear torque can be shifted to the outside wheel to maximize cornering bite.

Of course, wearing the Acura badge means a car-load of standard or available luxury and technological features. Among the more interesting is Active Noise Cancellation, which uses the audio system to electronically counterbalance unwanted sounds from intruding on the passengers' peace and quiet. Also standard is a leather interior, rear-view camera, power-operated sunroof, tailgate and multi-adjustable rear seats. The options list includes a blind-spot warning system, multiview rear camera, upgraded ventilated leather seats, high-end audio system, voice-activated navigation and adaptive cruise control that maintains a set distance between the ZDX and the vehicle directly ahead. There's also an adjustable suspension that varies the ride between "Comfort" and "Sport" settings.

A truly sporty sport ute has its drawbacks and compromises and the ZDX is no exception. The sloping hatchback compromises luggage space, while the smaller rear doors are not easy to enter or exit, particularly for tall adults.

By contrast, the comfortable driving position and various controls are up to snuff, the 300-horse V-6 is an eager performer and the ride is both solid and smooth. And, as our Manhattan man in the street so eloquently put it, this car is "hot."

Acura CSX makes luxury affordable

Volkswagen's GTI comes a close second. But, as I become further entrenched in my middle age, I also appreciate being pampered. And this is where Acura's CSX comes in.

Now, the last time I drove the built-in-Canada CSX, it was the sportier, topline Type-S, replete with its high-revving, 197-h.p., 2.0-litre four-cylinder and close-ratio six-speed manual transmission (the same powertrain as in the Honda Civic Si, which is only natural as the CSX is essentially a tarted-up, more powerful Civic sedan).

While the Type-S, with its combination of zippiness and amenities, is most likely the model to which I would gravitate, not everyone has such a need for speed. For these people, the tamer base CSX is a reasonable and less-expensive substitute.

At a starting price of $26,990, the CSX is the entry point to Honda's upscale brand. The biggest difference between the base model and the Type-S is found under the hood. In all but the Type-S, the 2.0L four puts out 155 h.p. at 6,000 r.p.m. instead of 197 at 7,800, and torque is the same at 139 ft-lbs. (although at 4,500 r.p.m. instead of 6,100).

The manual transmission also loses one cog. While the obvious net result is less performance than with the Type-S, the CSX has more than enough juice to keep up with the flow, and it is more livable in day-to-day driving situations, with adequate power in the lower ranges to keep the engine from bogging while stuck in heavy traffic. Plus, even though the five-speed manual doesn't have the same shift actuation of the close-ratio six-speed, it's still about as foolproof as they come. (A five-speed automatic costs an extra $1,300.)

Surprisingly, there's not that much difference in fuel economy between the two engines. I averaged 9.4 litres per 100 kilometres in the tester during a fairly even mix of highway and suburban driving, which was only 0.3 L/100 km better than in a Civic Si (same engine as in the Type-S, remember) I had driven several weeks earlier.

All CSXs are fitted with a four-wheel independent suspension. Only on the Type-S is the suspension sport-tuned, meaning stiffer springs, firmer damping and more tightly controlled suspension movement with upsized stabilizer bars at both ends. So, the handling is not quite as sharp in the base CSX as it is in the sportier sibling.

It's still pretty good, though, with not too much roll. Plus, the ride is a little easier on the passengers, being firm enough to provide a sense of the road conditions without the penalty of harshness when the tarmac is in poor shape.

The tester was equipped with the $3,000 Technology package, a must-have for gadget freaks. It upgrades the audio system to a 160-watt unit with digital audio card reader, MP3/Windows Media Audio compatibility and XM satellite radio, adds a navigation system with bilingual voice-recognition as well as a hands-free Bluetooth wireless mobile phone interface and includes high-intensity-discharge headlights.

Powertrain

Given the MDX's performance goals, its powertrain and driveline were required to advance on multiple fronts. The result is one of the most powerful normally aspirated 6-cylinder SUV powerplants currently available in America. In addition, the MDX returns competitive fuel economy and meets tough EPA TIER 2 - BIN 5 and CARB LEV II ULEV emissions standards. To put the power to the ground and provide agile, responsive handling, the MDX has standard Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®).

The MDX's sophisticated 3.7-liter VTEC® V-6 powerplant develops 300 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 275 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm. The MDX returns an EPA fuel economy rating of 15/20 (city/highway) mpg*.

Compared to the previous generation MDX, the 3.7L engine gains 47 horsepower and 25 lb-ft of torque. Of that gain, 20 horsepower came from an increase in displacement and a new 11.0:1 compression ratio and 15 more horsepower are due to new intake port shapes, valve design and VTEC® tuning. The final 12 horsepower is credited to the 3.7L MDX's high-flow induction and exhaust systems. Although more powerful, the engine is actually 17.2 pounds (3.7-percent) lighter than the 3.5L engine it replaced. A 5-speed automatic transmission with Sequential SportShift is standard, giving the driver the choice of fully automatic operation or manual shifting via a special shift gate. ENGINE ARCHITECTURE

The 3.7-liter VTEC® V-6 in the MDX is the largest production engine in Acura's history and it incorporates many of the refinements and improvements that have been developed in other Acura powerplants. The MDX engine has a smooth-firing 60-degree V-angle, compact overall dimensions, and it sheds 17.2 pounds from previous generation 3.5L engine. Aluminum alloy block construction including special aluminum cylinder sleeves saves weight and improves cooling, while VTEC® compatible cylinder heads operate four valves per cylinder for maximum power output.

A high-flow intake system, high compression ratio, close-coupled catalytic converters and high flow exhaust team to help the MDX engine produce strong torque.

ENGINE BLOCK

The MDX's lightweight, heat-treated die-cast aluminum-alloy block has unique cast-in-place aluminum cylinder liners. These high-silicon sleeves dissipate heat better than traditional iron liners. The aluminum sleeves also allow a closer piston-to-cylinder clearance for lower operating noise. A mechanical etching process during manufacturing exposes silicone particles embedded in the aluminum sleeves, which provide a hard piston ring sealing surface. The block also incorporates a deep-skirt design for rigid crankshaft support and reduced noise and vibration.

CRANKSHAFT/PISTONS/CONNECTING RODS

The MDX uses a forged-steel crankshaft for high strength with minimum weight. With their raised crowns, the MDX pistons raise the compression ratio (relative to the previous MDX) from 10.0:1 to 11.0:1. This elevated compression ratio is possible due to an oil jet system that sprays cooling oil on the underside of the piston crowns to keep temperatures in check. Steel connecting rods are forged in one piece and then the crankshaft ends are "crack separated," creating a lighter and stronger rod with a perfectly fitted bearing cap.

CYLINDER HEADS / VALVETRAIN

Like other Acura V-6 engines, the MDX powerplant uses single overhead camshaft (SOHC) cylinder heads. These lightweight components are made of pressure-cast, low-porosity aluminum, and improve overall packaging, enhance exhaust flow and allow the optimal positioning of a primary close-coupled catalytic converter on each cylinder bank. To save weight and reduce parts count, an exhaust manifold is an integral part of each cylinder head casting. Magnesium cylinder head covers save a total of 2.6 pounds.

The MDX features lightweight camshafts. Assembled from tubular steel shafts with splined steel lobes and journals that are pressed in place, this unique style of camshaft design is a first for Acura.

The MDX's intake port design has an optimized shape that contributes to the MDX's 300 horsepower output. Intake valves are 36mm in diameter (an increase of 1mm over the previous engine design), yet weigh 13-percent less due to a reduction in material in the valve head. The exhaust valves measure 30mm in diameter.

To ensure positive sealing, a 3-layer shim-type head gasket is used. A single Aramid-fiber reinforced belt drives the overhead camshafts.

VTEC® (VARIABLE VALVE TIMING AND LIFT ELECTRONIC CONTROL)

The MDX's VTEC® (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) operates the 12 intake valves in two distinct modes. Operation of the intake valves changes to optimize both volumetric efficiency and combustion of the air/fuel mixture. At low engine speeds, the intake valves have low lift and are open a comparatively short period of time during cylinder filling. At high engine speeds where breathing is critical, the valves switch to a high-lift, long duration mode to deliver improved volumetric efficiency. The VTEC® changeover point occurs at approximately 4,500 rpm and is virtually undetectable to the driver.

When the engine reaches the VTEC® changeover point, the powertrain control module (PCM) triggers the opening of an electric spool valve that routes pressurized oil to small pistons located in the intake valve rocker arms. The pistons slide into position to lock together the three intake rockers for a given cylinder, which then follow a single high-lift, long-duration camshaft lobe.

HIGH FLOW INDUCTION SYSTEM

To improve engine breathing and engine sound, particularly at high rpm and large throttle openings, the MDX has a low-restriction intake manifold system. With a large diameter inlet, a pair of resonators and a low-restriction air filter element, the 3.7L MDX induction system flows an additional 14-percent more than the previous 3.5L system.

DRIVE-BY-WIRE™ THROTTLE SYSTEM

The MDX doesn't use a conventional throttle cable, but instead has smart electronics that connect the throttle pedal to the electronic throttle-body. A programmed "gain" between throttle pedal and engine offers better drivability and optimizes engine response to suit driving conditions. The throttle profile of the new MDX provides low speed control, followed by progressively building response at higher speed for improved linearity.

The Drive-by-Wire™ throttle system evaluates the driving conditions by monitoring throttle pedal position, throttle-body opening position, road speed, and engine speed. This information is used to define the throttle control sensitivity. This gives the MDX throttle pedal a predictable and responsive feel that better meets driver expectations.

PROGRAMMED FUEL INJECTION (PGM-FI)

The MDX features a Multi-Point Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) system that continually adjusts the fuel delivery to yield the best combination of power, low fuel consumption and low emissions. Multiple sensors constantly monitor critical operating parameters such as throttle position, intake air temperature, coolant temperature, ambient air pressure, intake airflow volume, intake manifold pressure, exhaust-air ratios and the position of the crankshaft and cams.

2-PIECE DUAL-STAGE INTAKE MANIFOLD

The MDX uses a dual-stage intake manifold that is designed to deliver excellent airflow to the cylinders across the full range of engine operating speeds. The 2-piece manifold is also very light due to its cast magnesium design. The light-weight manifold combines with the new exhaust system to contribute 12 horsepower to the MDX's 300 horsepower total.

The induction system significantly boosts torque across the engine's full operating range by working in concert with the VTEC® valvetrain. Internal passages and two butterfly valves within the intake manifold are operated by the powertrain control module (PCM) to provide two distinct modes of operation by changing plenum volume and intake airflow routing.

At lower rpm these valves are closed to reduce the volume of the plenum and effectively increase the length of inlet passages for maximum resonance effect and to amplify pressure waves within each half of the intake manifold at lower rpm ranges. The amplified pressure waves significantly increase cylinder filling and torque production throughout the lower part of the engine's rpm band.

As the benefits of the resonance effect lessen with rising engine speed, the butterfly valves open at 3,800 rpm to interconnect the two halves of the plenum, increasing its overall volume. An electric motor, commanded by the PCM, controls the butterfly valves. The inertia of the mass of air rushing down each intake passage helps draw in more charge than each cylinder would normally ingest. The inertia effect greatly enhances cylinder filling and the torque produced by the engine at higher rpm.

DIRECT IGNITION AND DETONATION/KNOCK CONTROL

The MDX's powertrain control module (PCM) monitors engine functions to determine the best spark timing. An engine-block-mounted acoustic detonation/knock sensor "listens" to the engine, and based on this input, the PCM retards the ignition timing to prevent potentially damaging detonation. The MDX has a coil unit for each cylinder that is positioned above each spark plug's access bore.

CLOSE-COUPLED CATALYSTS AND VARIABLE FLOW EXHAUST SYSTEM

The exhaust manifolds of the 3.7L V-6 are cast directly into the aluminum cylinder heads to reduce weight and to put the engine's two primary catalytic converters as close as possible to the combustion chambers. The 600-cell per-square-inch, high-efficiency catalytic converters mount directly to the exhaust port of each cylinder head for extremely rapid converter light-off after the engine starts -- thus lowering emissions output. A significant weight savings and reduction in parts count is realized by eliminating a traditional exhaust manifold and converter design.

Downstream of the close-coupled catalysts, a hydroformed 2-into-1 collector pipe carries exhaust gases to a single secondary catalytic converter located under the passenger cabin. This high-flow unit has a revised shape and a large 62mm outlet. Downstream of the underfloor catalyst, the system splits flow into a pair of underfloor chambers (the previous MDX used a single chamber) to give the exhaust note a more refined sound. Dual silencers near the rear fascia incorporate an exhaust pressure-activated valve to balance the engine's need for proper exhaust backpressure at low rpm and free flow at high rpm. With the valve in each silencer closed, the exhaust sound level is muted for quiet cruising. When exhaust flow increases sufficiently due to high rpm and a large throttle opening, the silencer valves open and provide a secondary exit path inside the silencer chamber. In total, the MDX's exhaust system refinements substantially improve flow potential.

EMISSIONS CONTROL

The 2009 MDX meets tough EPA TIER 2 - BIN 5 and CARB LEV II ULEV emissions standards, and per regulations, is certified to this level of emissions performance for 120,000 miles.

A number of advanced technologies are factors in this excellent emissions performance. The cylinder-head-mounted close-coupled catalysts light off quickly after engine start up, and a 32-bit RISC microprocessor in the powertrain control module (PCM) boosts computing power to improve the precision of spark and fuel delivery. In particular, right after startup, better fuel atomization is provided by the high-efficiency multi-hole fuel injectors that more accurately deliver fuel to each cylinder.

The MDX's Multi-Point Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) system monitors the state of the exhaust gas and tracks multiple engine inputs including intake manifold pressure, throttle position, intake air temperature, coolant temperature, and such. Based on these inputs PGM-FI continuously adjusts and optimizes the amount of fuel delivered to each cylinder.

ONE-TOUCH STARTER SYSTEM WITH HIGH-POWERED STARTER
To ensure consistent starting, the MDX has a one-touch starter system that maintains starter engagement until the engine starts, even if the driver releases the ignition switch.

AIR CONDITIONER SYSTEM EFFICIENCY

To provide greater driving range while maintaining a comfortable interior climate, the MDX has excellent air conditioner efficiency. By partially mixing cool cabin air with fresh air in the blower, the amount of compressor operation can be reduced by up to 40-percent compared to operating exclusively on exterior air. Over the course of a tank of fuel, this partial recirculation mode can extend fuel economy by as much as 4-percent. This function operates automatically when the HVAC system is in Auto mode.

NOISE, VIBRATION AND HARSHNESS CONTROL

The MDX powerplant is exceptionally smooth thanks to its 60-degree cylinder V-angle and compact, rigid and lightweight die-cast aluminum cylinder block. A forged crankshaft, die-cast accessory mounts and a stiff cast-aluminum oil pan also help reduce noise and vibration.

5-SPEED AUTOMATIC WITH SEQUENTIAL SPORTSHIFT AND GRADE LOGIC CONTROL

The MDX has a standard 5-speed automatic with Sequential SportShift and Grade Logic Control to maximize acceleration performance, fuel economy and driver control. Compared to the previous generation MDX, this sophisticated transmission features lower gear ratios for improved acceleration and towing power, upgraded shafts, gears, bearings and clutches to match the engine's greater power output and increased cooling capacity to accommodate the MDX's 5000-pound towing capacity.

Designed for a high level of durability and low maintenance, the MDX transmission has a strengthened aluminum case that carries both high-torque clutches and high-strength gears. A transmission cooler is positioned in the front of the MDX to help keep the transmission fluid temperature within tolerance, particularly when towing.

Automatic Mode
The Sequential SportShift 5-speed transmission can be operated in conventional fully automatic mode via a console-mounted shifter. The Grade Logic Control System and Shift Hold Control are integrated into the shift programming to reduce gear "hunting" and unnecessary shifting.

While traveling uphill or downhill, Grade Logic Control alters the transmission's shift schedule, reducing shift frequency and improving speed control. Throttle position, vehicle speed and acceleration/deceleration rate are continuously measured, then compared with a map stored in the transmission computer. When the system determines the MDX is on a hill, the shift schedule is adjusted to automatically hold the transmission in a lower gear for better climbing power or increased downhill engine braking.In spirited windy road driving, where the throttle is quickly released and the brakes are applied (as might be the case when decelerating to enter a corner), Shift Hold Control prevents upshifts to higher gears (4th and 5th). This reduces disturbance to the chassis and ensures abundant power is immediately available without a downshift. On curving roads, Shift Hold Control significantly improves throttle responsiveness and reduces unnecessary shifting.

Manual Mode
The Sequential SportShift transmission can be shifted into manual mode by moving the console-mounted gear selector lever laterally to a special gate to the left of the "Drive" position. When in manual mode, a forward push of the selector lever commands an upshift, while a rearward pull commands a downshift. The current transmission gear is shown in a digital display within the tachometer face. To heighten control and driver involvement, special shift logic in manual mode delivers quicker, firmer shifts than in fully automatic mode.

An array of features are active when the transmission is in manual mode to help protect the engine and drivetrain from inadvertent damage. The ECU cuts off fuel flow to the engine if there is a possibility of over revving. In the rare situation where the fuel cutoff alone is unable to prevent engine over revving (as could happen on a steep downhill) the transmission will upshift itself to prevent engine damage. Also, when downshifting, the transmission won't execute a driver-commanded downshift that would send the engine beyond redline in the lower gear. Regardless of the selected ratio, the Sequential SportShift transmission will automatically downshift to first gear as the vehicle comes to a stop thus preventing pulling away from a stop in a higher gear.

5-POSITION SHIFT GATE

The MDX has an intuitive 5-position shift gate that simplifies the operation of the transmission. When operated in automatic mode, the transmission allows the driver to choose D (1st through 5th gear) or D3 (1st through 3rd gear). The D3 position selects only the first three gears for increased engine braking or reduced shifting during city driving.

COOPERATION BETWEEN 5AT AND DRIVE-BY-WIRE

Both shift speed and smoothness are improved by cooperation between the Drive-by-Wire™ throttle system and the electronically controlled automatic transmission. Since the engine can be throttled by the engine management system during upshifts and downshifts, the function of the engine and transmission can be closely choreographed for faster, smoother shifting. As a result, the peak g-forces (or "shift shock") are reduced significantly during upshifts and downshifts.

SUPER HANDLING ALL-WHEEL DRIVE™

The MDX has Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) as standard equipment. This innovative full-time all-wheel-drive system actively distributes the optimum amount of torque not only between the front and rear axles but also between the left and right rear wheels. This "torque vectoring" improves cornering traction and steering precision by creating a yaw moment that helps the MDX turn. In addition to providing exceptional performance on dry pavement, the MDX's SH-AWD® system provides significant performance gains in snow and ice, as well as similar gains in off road performance. Effect of SH-AWD®

By overdriving the MDX's rear wheels up to 1.7-percent faster than the speed of the front axle, SH-AWD® can provide a "yaw moment" while accelerating into and through tight corners. The torque vectoring ability of SH-AWD® to directly create a yaw moment to allow the vehicle to track exactly as the driver intended is called Direct Yaw Control. This reduces unwanted understeer (or vehicle "push") during everyday driving and when the driver chooses to go for a spirited drive on a favorite stretch of mountain road.

Up to the available traction limits, direct yaw control delivers an uncanny level of precision and driver confidence. Since direct yaw control acts preemptively, VSA® brake and throttle interventions are less intrusive. In changing and challenging road conditions, SH-AWD® reacts to adjust drive torque more quickly than the VSA® can apply stabilizing brake torque.

During acceleration and cornering on slippery surfaces, a conventional 4WD vehicle distributes torque evenly between the two rear wheels. This may lead to loss of traction of the inside rear wheel as load is transferred to the outside wheel due to load transfer during cornering. However with SH-AWD® the side-to-side rear torque distribution varies according to the lateral g (and associated load transfer of the rear tires). For all situations including low-traction roads, the side-to-side torque distribution is naturally aligned with the tire vertical loads. This enhances traction and allows maximum utilization of the available road surface grip during acceleration and cornering.

Electronic Controls and Parameters - VSA®

Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) is included as standard equipment on the MDX. By continually monitoring the vehicle's operating parameters (such as road speed, throttle position, steering wheel position, accelerating, braking and cornering loads), VSA® anticipates if the vehicle is approaching oversteer or understeer. To help correct either of these situations, VSA® first acts to transfer torque bias to the axle with the most traction. This preventative measure significantly reduces the number of brake and throttle interventions. The response is so quick that the instability may be corrected even before the driver knows it is occurring. Traction Control is integrated into the VSA® which helps the MDX accelerate smoothly on slippery surfaces. The VSA® can request the SH-AWD® to adjust its torque level, thus allowing direct yaw control of the MDX to maximize stability under all driving conditions.

SH-AWD® System Layout

The MDX's SH-AWD® system is closely related to the system in the 2009 RDX. (The system in the RL sedan differs mechanically between the RDX and MDX systems, but is similar in principle.) A torque transfer unit is bolted directly to the front-mounted transaxle. Attached to the front differential's ring gear is a helical gear that provides input torque to the transfer unit. A short horizontal shaft and a hypoid gear set within the case send power to the propeller shaft, which in turn carries it to the rear drive unit. The MDX rear axle is designed to turn up to 1.7-percent faster than the front axle.

Direct Electromagnetic Clutch Systems

Located on either side of the hypoid gear that drives the rear axle, two identical direct electromagnetic clutch systems control the amount of drive torque that reaches each rear wheel. These clutch systems can be controlled as a pair to alter the front/rear torque split or can be controlled independently to allow up to 100-percent of the total rear axle torque to go to one side of the vehicle. The fast acting clutches coupled with smart control logic means traction is maximized in most conditions, without the need for driver intervention.

An electric coil controls the pressure in each clutch device. The amount of available rear axle torque transmitted to each rear wheel can vary continuously, ranging between zero and 100-percent, depending on the conditions. Since the clutches are electromagnetically operated, the amount of drive torque delivered to each rear wheel can be controlled quickly and precisely, reducing wheel slip in low traction conditions.

The clutch packs and friction material are specially designed for the small amount of continuous slip between front and rear axles (created by the 1.7-percent speed differential), while ensuring the expected level of Acura durability. An oil-temperature sensor allows the ECU to estimate the clutch plate coefficient of friction (which changes with heat) in each clutch pack and then adjusts the current sent to the electromagnetic coil that controls the compensation of each clutch. To ensure that the amount of torque transmitted remains optimized as miles accumulate a coil provides a feedback loop that the ECU uses to adjust current to the electromagnetic clutches to compensate for clutch wear.

MAINTENANCE MINDER™ SYSTEM

An Maintenance Minder™ system monitors the vehicle's operating conditions to eliminate unnecessary service visits while ensuring that the vehicle is properly maintained. When the Maintenance Minder™ system determines that maintenance is required, the driver is alerted via a series of messages on the Multi-Information Display (MID). The alerts occur well in advance of required maintenance for scheduling convenience.

This resettable system indicates when maintenance is due on many normal service parts and systems, including oil and filter change, tire rotation, air cleaner, automatic transmission fluid, parts replacement and more. The MID monitors operating conditions such as oil and coolant temperature along with total engine rotations to determine the proper service intervals. Maintenance alerts are presented when the ignition is first turned on, not while driving, unless an urgent need arises. The driver can also check the remaining oil life at any time through the MID.

Generous standard appointments include leather interior trim, power moonroof, HID headlights, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, Maintenance Minder system, and an Acura Premium Sound System that includes XM Radio and AUX jack connectivity.

The MDX's Technology Package includes a wide array of features such as the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition and rearview camera; AcuraLink Satellite Communication System; Interface dial; AcuraLink real-time traffic that now features 77 major metropolitan markets; a 410-watt, 10-speaker Acura/ELS Premium Sound System with multi-format 6-disc DVD-Audio changer; a GPS-linked, solar-sensing, dual-zone automatic climate control system with air filtration and humidity control; and a power operated rear tailgate.

The available Sport Package adds several features on top of the Technology package including the exclusive Active Damper System, which provides both Sport and Comfort settings to handle varying road conditions.
